On the first week of class, Ms. Jinchi explained to us about the module outline. Aside from that, Ms. Jinchi gave us a lecture about communication process and for further information we should watch the video uploaded in TIMES. This video is our first assignment that will be presented on week 2. We were asked to create a 5-7 slides PowerPoint presentation what we understood from the video of 'The Communication Process'. This presentation will be in a group of 3-4 members.

Lecture 2: Group Assignment 2 (Interpreting the message of a song)
September 5, 2017 (Week 2)

On the second week of class, my group and I presented our powerpoint about the communication process in front of the class. Afterwards, our lecturer proceed in briefing the next assignment which is interpreting a song. In this group assignment, we were asked to pick from the random folded paper given by our lecturer wherein the paper that we chose has a title of the song written on it. The song that we got is needed for us to interpret it what we understand and do some research about the song as well. We need to know what's the story behind the music that the artists' wrote.

Lecture 3: Group Assignment 2 (Interpreting the message of a song)
September 12, 2017 (Week 3)

On the third week, Ms. Jinchi consulted every group about their given song. She wanted to see our progression and ideas for our assignment. Our group decided to make a video, because we thought that it is the best way to interpret the song. However, Ms. Jinchi wanted us not to jump into conclusion where we already know what medium to use. We should first do a research of the song where we should know when it is published, why the song was created, what's the meaning behind the song, to whom is the song directed to, and other possible questions. Then afterwards, we should search on the visuals, as well as on our own ideas. As for the medium, any medium that we chose should provide a reason why we chose it instead of other type of medium. We should know who is our target audience. As we research all of this pictures and even the descriptions, we should document everything in our sketchbook where during the submission week, we will submit our individual sketchbook that is compiled together as well as our final work. My group member and I wrote down every feedback that is given by Ms. Jinchi on our sketchbook and decided to do more research. As we reach the end of the class, we were reminded that week 4 will be our first quiz and the presentation of this assignment 2 will be on week 5.

Lecture 4: Quiz & Group Assignment 2 (Interpreting the message of a song)
September 19, 2017 (Week 4)

On the forth week, we had our first quiz and it is held online. As the quiz ended, we proceed having a discussion again with our lecturer about the progression of out assignment which is the song. For our progression, at first we chose to make a video but we told our lecturer that we decided to change our idea from a video to a waterfall flip book since we don't have enough time. Making a video takes a lot of effort and time consuming where we can't make it in week 5 for the submission. Since we told her about the flip book as our medium, we were asked to research about the different types of flip book and why this particular flip book, why it is better, why not a poster, so, all of this questions should be answered in our sketchbook and provide some of the research we found.

Lecture 5: Group Assignment 2 Presentation (Interpreting the message of a song) & Brief of the Final Project
September 26, 2017 (Week 5)

On the fifth week, it is the week where each group will be presenting their final work. After we all presented our final outcome, Ms. Jinchi informed us that we will be having a field trip, do some research, photographs about Malaysian cultural art form, symbols, signs, and figure out some social issues that can be found as we go around to Bricksfield, Kuala Lumpur. This purpose is for our final assignment research.

Group Assignment 2: Interpreting the message of a song (Week 2 - Week 5)
Research and Work Process:

Song:
Bridge over troubled waters by Simon & Garfunkel

When you're weary, feeling small,
When tears are in your eyes
I will dry them all
I'm on your side
Oh when times get rough
And friends just can't be found

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

When you're down and out
When you're on the street
When evening falls so hard
I will comfort you
I'll take your part
Oh when darkness comes
And pain is all around

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will lay me down

Sail on, silver girl
Sail on by
Your time has come to shine
All your dreams are on their way
See how they shine
Oh if you need a friend
I'm sailing right behind

Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind
Like a bridge over troubled water
I will ease your mind

In this assignment we were given the freedom to choose whatever medium to interpret the song that we got. At first we were thinking of making a video, but because it is time consuming and it needs extra work to do it, we change to flip book. When we decided to make a flip book, it is not a good idea because some of the characters might be skipped so the reader might face difficulty to understand what the story is about. So, I came up with a pull tab book which is interesting enough and this method involve the reader to pull the bool. We did some research about the method that we chose which is the pull tab book. We decided to tell a story without any words, just picture so that it will not be boring for the reader. I did some sketches that interprets the song and since it is group work, we all divided into different task. I did the background for this project wherein I use photoshop to manipulate the images.

I did some sketches and research about the medium that we are going to make.

Rationale:
The song "Bridge over troubled waters" by Simon & Garfunkel was inspired by a single line from a gospel song. The title of the song was also inspired by Claude Jeter's line "I'll be your bridge over deep water if you trust in me." Simon & Garfunkel is an American folk duo and this song was created during the Vietnam War in the late 60's and the song was released in 1970s. The lyrics of this song are very general and can be used to describe any struggles you are facing there will be someone who will be comforting you.

We decided to create a waterfall flip book where we show it in a form of a short story using the main idea of our interpretation which is about being there for the people we care who is struggling and facing a lot of problems. This waterfall flip book can attract anyone from people who is still at a very young age until those who are adults already because this short story in the waterfall flip book doesn't require further thinking since it is easy to understand.

In a visual sense, we used gloomy and dark atmosphere to represent the painful part of our side when we encounter problems. We used cartoon character to keep our design interesting with a combination of real background and cartoon character. Our tagline to tell a story about no matter what you will go through there will always be someone to comfort you and you will not be alone.
