Lecture 1: Introduction to video editing and production

27 March, 2018 (Week 1)
On the first week of the class, our lecturer, Mr. Martin, introduced us about what is video editing and production is all about. He briefly explained about the module. Aside from that, he mentioned that we will deal with a lot of video editing which we are using Adobe Premiere Pro software to do it.

In the middle of the class discussion, Mr. Martin showed us some examples about the work done by the seniors that we will be doing for the upcoming weeks. Most of the videos that were shown to us are short films with no dialogue. He added that not all interesting and great videos necessarily need to have dialogues.

Tutorial 1:
On that day itself, we were given an exercise where we actually learn how to use Adobe Premiere Pro software to edit 1 short film from a raw footage that our senior has captured. This exercises taught us how to cut scenes with some short cut keys taught by Mr. Martin as well as to be more familiar more with the software.

Lecture 2: Introduction to types of shots

5 April, 2018 (Week 2)
On the second week of the class, our lecturer, Mr. Martin, introduced us about types of shots when we do video editing and production.

  1. Extreme Wide Shot (EWS) often used to show the surroundings and give a scale, distance and geographical location and importantly used as establishing shot
  2. Wide of Shots (WS) subjects and important objects in the surroundings.
  3. Medium Wide Shot (MWS) typical shot above or bellow knees, a balance between figure and surrounding.
  4. Medium Shot (MS) I subject are important, understanding what subject motif.
  5. Medium Shot (MS) II a shot of a person movement or action. generally direct show action
  6. Medium Close Up (MCU) between waist & shoulders above head shot.
  7. Over the Shoulder Shot (O.S) over-shoulder and subject is behind the shoulder.
  8. Close Up Shot (CU) isolate the important subject. Shot focus on facial expression.
  9. Extreme Close Up Shot (ECU) magnifies a details subjects. Emphasis the subject
Notes of the important rules that need to follow to produce a well compose shoot :

  1. Take note of the camera heights
  2. Use some angle shots either high or low angle shots (Level angle composition)
  3. Apply rule of thirds
  4. Camera should always follow the motion of subject.

Tutorials 2: Shoot the following angle

For today's exercise, we were give a short film where we should gather it up together to form a short film just like the first week's exercise.

Our second exercises is shooting at different angle that is listed down already by our lecturer.



Lecture 3: 
12 April, 2018 (Week 3)
On the third week of the class, our lecturer, Mr. Martin, gave a lecture about 3 - ACT Structure. Where there will always have 3 sections when creating a story. They consist of the,
  • Beginning: Setup / introduction of a story
  • Middle: Confrontation of a problem in the story
  • End: Resolution of problems

As for an exercises inside the class,  we were given 2 short films and we were asked to classify it out the 3- ACT Structure from the given short film.

24 April, 2018 (Week 5)

On this week 5 in class, Mr. Martin showed us how to add the Credits scrolling up to the video. Then, we are asked to edit the video that we shoot on week 4.

On this week 7, we learnt about applying some effects, adjusting the exposure, highlights, midtone shadows, and many more in the adjustment layers, so that the original video won't be affected.

On the ninth week, we do our second shooting exercise about 'Paper has a great Future'.We were given the example of the video and were asked to shoot more or less the same thing.

Inspiration:
For the project theme given to us is about 'The end of the world'. Our lecturer gave some examples of the video: https://www.facebook.com/ScienceNaturePage/videos/1266455060153416/
The theme itself gave me some ideas about the movies I have watched before which are: San Andreas, The Impossible, and The 5th Wave. Those 3 movies are the movies that I think draws my attention a lot since they all have great storylines.

However, I need to consider how to make a tsunami and other natural disasters. I need to know how to edit those tsunami effects. As we have limited sources I change my mind instead of making the usual the end of the world because of natural disaster, I am thinking of making it a different one. I got some inspiration from the movies of infinity war, Lucy, and Ghost in the shell.

This link of integration effect is used in the movie of 'Infinity War' where half of the population were banished. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C913enLWYxE&t=157s . I want to make a movie about how technology control us and banish us from the world.

The brief of the story about 'The end of the world'

There live a girl named, Laura. She is a quiet girl who always been bullied in class because she has a great lack of intelligence following the lesson. Laura has never been appreciated and loved anywhere she goes. As a result, the pain and grudge she can no longer bear burst out turning her into a beast making her to come up with dark ideas. Laura has an idea of creating an object that can absorb people's knowledge as well as choosing those people who she no longer wants them to exist. People will banish from the world whenever they start connecting themselves to the wifi. That is how the object operates. However, those who are connected to mobile data instead of wifi remains. One by one people started to disappear until there is only one girl who still remains. This girl named, Jane. The reason she still remains is because Jane is the only person that can accept, give comfort and love that Laura has been longing for. She is the key that can ease the pain of Laura and changes her mindset.


Story Breakdown:
INTRODUCTION (Present time)
Laura is sitting alone in class full of anger in her eyes and has been holding her grudge for months that can be seen through her gripping hands.
FLASHBACK
Laura is being bullied whenever the teacher return her exam paper where in she received a failing grade most of the time. She then run and left the class and lock herself in the toilet. She burst out and have the thought of getting a revenge to prove that she is capable to do anything. She may fail and do no good in her studies but she may be good at something else.
(Present time)
The unbearable outrage she felt that keeps on playing in her thoughts like a broken tape made and transform her into a bad person having unfavorable ideas by inventing an object that will suck in all the people's knowledge whenever they are connected to the wifi also banish all the people she wish to no longer exist. After having this thought, Laura texted someone she knew to create her object and was asked to take it in the evening. Reaching in the evening, she stood up and acquire her object from the IT engineer.


DIFFERENT SCENE (The next day)

It was just like every other day when we, students go to campus and do our routine by attending class, go to the library or hang out with out friends in the cafeteria. Nowadays, people cannot live without Wi-Fi and you cannot see places with no wifi's especially in school wherein it serves the purpose of education. Wifi plays an important role in our lives because that is the source where we are connected to the world and for us to explore more about the world out there. This is the reason why Laura created something that people can't resist in their lives. One day, there is one girl named, Jane, passing by the library to borrow some books. Across looking for the book she will borrow, she met her friend named, Angel. They talked and sat down together where Angel grab her laptop and started to connect to the wifi. Whereas Jane took out her phone and about to connect to the wifi, but something odd happened. Jane paused as Angel started to fade away. When Jane look up around, one by one people in the library started to disappear as well. However, those who are connected to mobile data, they stay. Jane hurridly stood up and left the library and all she can see is everyone started disappearing. Jane felt that there is something wrong and may be there is a connection with the IT system, so she went to the seventh floor to ask the IT management but no one knows what is happening. Time flies, it was late in the evening where there's no one left except for her. Jane was exhausted she is still hoping that there is still someone out there that remains. She opened every classroom's door to check is there is anyone. Until she was on the last door to check. When Jane started to open the door, she saw a young lady who is sitting still, staring at nothing and her hand can't stop from writing the words of anger. Jane draw herself near her asking so many question but didn't get even a single respond. Jane started praying and she was moved to hug her to comfort her that everything is going to be okay. As soon as she hug her, Laura disappear and left a note and everything went back to normal, where everyone went back to their usual activities.

Story Breakdown (FIRST REVISED):

Laura is being bullied (pushing Laura's shoulder, head, the bullies show off their perfect grades in front of Laura's face, Laura's book are thrown away) whenever the teacher return her exam paper where in she received a failing grade most of the time. (When Laura is bullied, there is one friend named, Jane, felt sorry for her but she didn't do anything she just stares). Laura then run and left the class and lock herself in the toilet. When Laura left, that's the time when Jane stood up and defend her (Slightly push the bullies shoulder). She burst out and have the thought of getting a revenge to prove that she is capable to do anything. She may fail and do no good in her studies but she may be good at something else.
(Present time)

On a fine early morning, we all attend class. Everyone sat down already since the class has started. Laura is the only one who is late for class. 10 minutes later, Laura came into the class and sat down beside Jane. As she sat down and put all the things down, she then go out of the class immediately. Class is still on going, where students started opening their Laptop. Angel who is sitting beside Jane is turning on her cellphone and she turns on the wifi. All of the sudden Jane saw that her hand started disappearing and everyone in the class one by one started to disappear as well. Jane hurriedly stood up and left the class and the same thing she see where people started disappearing. As she look to her right, there is still one person left standing wearing all black facing the view. So, Jane runs toward her but all she can see is that the girl is not moving. She is like a statue and the only body parts that is moving is her hand which she can't stop from writing the words of anger. Jane shake her body and ask so many question but she didn't even glance at her or give any respond. Jane started praying and she was moved to hug her to comfort her that everything is going to be okay. As soon as she hug her, Laura disappear and left a note and everything went back to normal, where everyone went back to their usual activities.

Moral Value:

Everyone is smart on their own way. Don't bully someone just because they are different from us. Words scars, Rumors destroy, Bullies kill. We never know what might they do. The victims may stand strong and fight back in the right way but they can also turn into a beast because of the pain that they can no longer bear.  Worst case they might want to go for a suicide. For that, people should show some kindness towards other people, help each other out so that they may grow as well.

Laura went to the toilet just to fix herself by applying a light make up however, her classmates just can't stop staring at her. This make Laura stop whatever she's doing and pack her makeup and leave the toilet immediately for class. As she sat down in class, she continues her project and fall asleep. Upon waking up, her project is no longer there. She burst out and ask one by one if anyone saw her project that she left in front of her but no one wants to admit that her project is in the trash.  When Laura looked around, everyone just laugh. This makes her so angry that leads her to the thought of getting a revenge that no one deserves to be treated that way even if you don't like that person.
(Present time)

                                                             FLASHBACK
Laura went to the toilet and fix herself up by putting some lipstick on however, there is one of her classmates judge her in a mean way. This stopped Laura putting her makeup on. She felt dreadful. This doesn’t stop here. During class, Laura was doing her project and she fall asleep. One of the bullies who were sitting at her back came over to take a look of Laura’s project. She then took it away and throw it to the trash-bin . Upon waking up, Laura was surprised with her project that is no longer there. She look around and everyone was just laughing in a mean way. She then found that her project is inside her trash bin already. This makes her so angry and left the class. When she was walking along the hallway with the outraged she felt, there is also one girl who happened to pass by and judge Laura’s look and all of the sudden Laura made that girl fainted by grabbing the girl’s hand.

                                                              (Present time)

The unbearable outrage she felt makes her want to let the one who bully her dies. All of the sudden Laura received a text message from tiffany to meet her in class. On her way to meet tiffany in class, Laura met the bully talking with her friend. Passing by her made her so eager to touch her and she did. The bully began to feel dizzy and not evenly balance trying to chase after Laura, however, she failed and fell to the ground.

Character's Introduction:

Heba - Main Character
She is a girl who has mental issue that makes her keeps of hallucinating person who always bully her until such time she was killed by her own thoughts.

Kimberly - Bullies - Side Character
The girl who is haunting Heba that is said to be a bad guy but actually she is not. At the end she was about to be killed because Heba wants to end it where she can’t hold it anymore being haunt.

Arailym - Side Character
The girl who happened to pass by Heba while judging her by her look

Tiffany - Side Character
The girl who help stopped Heba’s action in the climax scene.

Throughout this course, I find this module interesting. At first when we go the theme about the end of the world, my first thought is making a film about tsunami and so on however, I know it is impossible to shoot. It was so stressful doing video because I thought this module is easy however, it's not as easy as what I thought because during this module we need to organize everything from the location, the story, how we shoot, the angle, until the editing such as the color correction and transition. We need pay attention to all of that that is making me stress and keep on repeating. This module make me repeat and make a lot of adjustment. It was so tedious however, throughout this module my experience is this course I am enjoying and it is fun somehow. Doing this video is not easy but Mr. Martin really guide me throughout from the beginning to the end. He really help me ease doing this final project. Mr. Martin really give his time for me to consult him. I really appreciate when he offer his time to consult him. When I have the luxury of time, I want to know more about effects and transition so that if in the future I will make a video it will be better than this.
