Lecture 1: Introduction to Design research methodology

3, September 2018 (Week 1)
On the first week of class, Dr. Hayati briefed us about the module. This module is all about research about our preferred topics about multimedia/ entertainment industry. In this research we were divided into different groups with different research topics. At first I was really confuse what to pick for my research studies. But, I narrow it down either I will do App development or motion graphics-special effects.

After dividing ourselves into groups, Dr. Hayati discussed one by one what we are supposed to do. She gave a lot of ideas for us to understand further. Our tasks is to come up with problem statement.

Tutorial 1: Discussion about the chosen topic

7, September 2018 (Week 1)
On the first week of the second meeting of class, Dr. Hayati wanted us all to present our problem statement of our chosen topic. Throughout the discussion I got helped by listening to all the ideas that my friend mentioned as well as the feedback given by our lecturer. Dr. Hayati did really carved our thinking for a better understanding. She keeps on reminding us to see ourselves as a content provider for the market in the future. Also, she told us to ask ourselves "What can you offer differently from other people out there as a content provider." I got to present my problem statement at the end of class through the ideas that Dr. Hayati keeps on giving us.

The topic that I chose is motion graphic. For motion graphic, I figured out some problems that can be solved in the future. Nowadays people tend to use motion graphic to deliver a message or information to the crowd. However, this medium sometimes is not suitable for the elderly/ old generation. People back then from different generation tend to perceive things nowadays in a different way. The elder people tend to feel that motion graphic can be so cartoonist or childish for information to be delivered. From my perspective, not all motion graphic is cartoonish, I can say that it depends on the content or the information that wanted to be delivered. The perception of old generation is also not wrong, sometimes some of the motion graphic is mislead leading the content to be merely for fun.

Most motion graphic designer will have their objectives, wherein when they are designing, they know they want that the viewers to understand the information easily by creating a cartoon character to represent the actual things however, the level of seriousness of the content will be different. People from different generation will have different ways of thinking.

Lecture 2: Problem statement

14, September 2018 (Week 2)

On the second week of class, Dr. Hayati gave a lecture on how to write a proper problem statement since we still got confuse and interchange them between problem statement, research question, research problem. As the class ended,  she reminded us to start reading some articles and if possible summarize them.

Lecture 3: Librarian session - Information literacy

21, September 2018 (Week 3)

On the third week of class, there was no lecture conducted as we got a session with the librarian to get to know about Taylor's library website. We learnt how to search articles, journals, thesis, e-books and a lot more. We were taught how to do a proper referencing and how to do citation.

Tutorial 4:

24, September 2018 (Week 4)

On the forth week of class, Dr. Hayati consulted each one of us about our problem statement and take a look at our first draft. As i consulted Dr. Hayati, I need to break down my research question into Technical and Conceptual question. Rephrase my objective statement and find some articles to support my problem statement. Do a proper citation using APA style and avoid using first party like ‘I, You, Me’.

Lecture 4:

28, September 2018 (Week 4)

On the second meeting for the lecture class, Dr. Hayati introduced us about data collection which is the qualitative and quantitative research. She also taught us about the eight step process in conducting a research.

Lecture 5: Critical review

5 October 2018 (Week 5)

On the fifth week of class, Dr. Hayati gave a lecture about how to write critical review. She mentioned that we should be a critical reader to be a critical thinker. The lecture conducted and all the slides and samples given really help to write a critical writing. Dr. Hayati really wants us to understand her class wherein she really help us in anyway she can when we asked questions.

Tutorial 5: Consultation for the final research proposal

1, October 2018 (Week 5)

On the fifth week of tutorial class, As I consulted for the final research proposal, Dr. Hayati asked me to include my cover page. Aside from that, I need to make some changes in my objective column and for a proper research I was suggested to find references from a scholar journal or article. Then we need to proceed reading at least 4 articles already and if possible summarize it. Next week we need to come up with presentation already.

Tutorial 6: Critical review presentation

8, October 2018 (Week 6)

In today's class, we were all presented our critical review. As in my case when I presented, the feedback that i got from Dr. Hayati is that I should be focusing more to journal not someone else thesis. Another thing is that, I need to make sure that the thesis that i am reading can correlate to my research studies. As I presented, I should have been more critical in evaluating all the articles that i found, state the limitation and strength of it, what could be improved in the article. For the next articles, i will try to make sure that it is a journal and can correlate it to my research studies.

Final Report Presentation

December 3, 2018

Reflection:

In this research methodology class, I learnt how to think critically, do a lot of research and conduct primary research to collect primary data. It was very challenging things to do especially collecting primary data by having to email interview and also face to face interview. There are so many things that I learnt from this module especially doing presentation.

The difficulty that I found is that using formal language when sending out an email interview to the expert. Also, how to reply back, how to response and send my gratitude to them. When conducting an interview and finding the participants, it requires a lot of effort because time is a problem where conducting and collecting primary data took a lot of time and patience. I have n problem for this, just that I need to do a lot of research and reading which is my weaknesses. However, I won't stop learning and reading to gain more knowledge.
