ASSIGNMENT 1

THE BRIEF

PROGRESSION

Selected Issue that I Faced around Campus

Issue that I found around campus is the printed paper. Students, staffs and even lecturers do print important notes such as, assignments, working notes, test papers and many more. There will be at times that they made a mistake on their printed papers and for some reason the paper is crumbled and thrown away to the trash. This kind of action should be stopped because every time I saw people doing this it makes me feel so uncomfortable and uneasy. It will be so rude of me if I will approach them and reprimand them for their action. They might think that it’s their paper and they pay for it so they can do whatever they want with the paper and why am I involving myself and make it as a problem. Instead of approaching them, I hope my design in this poster making can help raise awareness to recycle those unwanted papers.

THE BRIEF
Using controversial visuals into acceptable design solutions using time-based media

PROGRESSION

Selected Issue Faced around Campus : Excessive usage of toilet papers

Concerns found in Taylor’s University is the over usage of toilet paper which is a waste of resources that can harm the environment. Some people will take excessive amount of tissue, far more than what they need. Our video is made for the purpose of raising an awareness delivering a message to manage our waste and take only what is needed and don’t go for more. Tissue has the highest percentage of waste that piling up in the landfill (Naidu, 2017). In general, tissue paper takes 1 month to decompose. The concept for raising this issue is to use mummy figure as an exaggeration of how much toilet paper people use. The main point of this video is to catch people’s attention. A live action short film will give a greater impact towards this serious issue. The goal is to make this video impactful when the viewers will watch it. Disgusting and dirty toilet visuals will be shown in order to emphasis the message to always keep the toilet clean.

“The toilet paper we use could go around the planet every 2 minutes, or travel to the sun and back every 10 days. It would cover an area more than twice the size of France every year” (The World Counts, n.d.).  As tissue was manufactured, trees are cut down resulting less oxygen produced by the trees, waters and electricity are needed as part of the materials used to produce papers. To make a tissue it takes 0.013 kWh. Facts about tissue is that, tissue is the most consumed water to be produced. The worst case is that manufactory will emits pollution that can harm living things. (Poppenheimer, 2013). Environmental impact categories: human toxicity, climate change, human health and ecosystems, and fossil depletion. Tissues are made from virgin fiber for a single use only. This means tissue cannot be recycled. This issue is really concerning if we take a deeper study. Tissue is usually used mostly for hygiene purpose and mostly found in the toilet. Some people surprising use tissue for unnecessary things such as playing it when they got bored. Things like this may look small problems, however, if we don’t make a change from now, what will happen in the future? Small problems like this should be treated and for that, a live action short film awareness is made. The content of the video is a serious thing however, the aim of the video is to be trigger people to make changes on how they use toilet paper. Life action has always been one the method to deliver a message that is serious to make a greater impact that can get into people’s attention easily and also hit them with the visual used as well as the message.

Design that is executed is a video that will show a person who is in the toilet that keeps on pulling the toilet paper and playing it until they are being wrapped like a mummy, person that flushes the toilet paper and person who doesn’t flush at all after using the toilet. All of these scenes will address to a variety issue but we will specifically focus on how people take excessive toilet paper and didn’t realize that they are creating unnecessary waste. At the end of the film, they will look at the tissue that has unwrapped them, grab it and throw it to the trash bin. This scene is representing that the tissue could be used for other purpose and could be saved instead of throwing it directly to the trash bin without realizing the result of what he is doing

As we design this video we made a hypothesis that a live action gives greater impact rather than doing 2D animation. Hopefully this video delivers the message that we intend to emphasize. Furthermore, this video will encourage people to change their bad toilet habits. Limitation that we are facing is that, there are a lot of videos out there about raising awareness of the same issues. However, the problem just cannot be solved. There are people who just don’t care. There is a saying that people will not change how they behave until they experience the bad things and hits them to make some changes. This issue cannot be solved by just delivering the message through video, it must come from us within. There should be a visual or things that triggers us to make a change. In the making of this short film we consider a lot of things that are important such as the storyline, transition from one scene to another and camera angle to be able to evoke viewer’s emotion and understand what are the message that the film trying to convey.
